  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees (177 degrees c). Lightly grease two loaf pans.
  2. In a large mixer or bowl cream together sugar, lard, and butter. Add eggs and blend for 30 seconds. Then add flour, baking soda, and vanilla. Blend for two more minutes. Fold in walnuts if desired. Pour batter into prepared pan.
  3. Bake in preheated oven for 55- 65 minutes, until a knife inserted into center of the loaf comes out clean.
